I wanted to replace the many remotes we had for different devices, but I couldn't find one out in the market that I liked and was not locked to its own proprietary system. So I have decided to create my own. I started a year-long journey of learning about electronics, product design and prototyping. At the end I have sourced the parts, designed my own printed circuit board, designed the case, got everything manufactured, designed the UI and developed my own software that is communicating with my smart home system. Now I have a remote that is fully tailored to my needs.
I designed a charging dock for the remote, where I can just pop it in whenever it needs more juice.
The remote is running on a Raspberry Pi Zero W. It uses a 2000mAh battery and has proximity and gesture sensor built-in for gesture based control and auto-brightness.
It has controls for lights, blinds and heating, as well as a full Spotify and Apple TV integration to control all the music and movies.
